The Photographer's Eye Composition and Design for Better Digital Photos

Design is the single most important factor in creating a successful photograph. The ability to see the potential for a strong picture and then organize the graphic elements into an effective, compelling composition has always been one of the key skills in making photographs.Digital photography has brought a new, exciting aspect to design - first because the instant feedback from a digital camera allows immediate appraisal and improvement; and second because image-editing tools make it possible to alter and enhance the design after the shutter has been pressed. This has had a profound effect on the way digital photographers take pictures. The Photographer's Eye shows how anyone can develop the ability to see and shoot great digital photographs. The book explores all the traditional approaches to composition and design, but crucially, it also addresses the new digital technique of shooting in the knowledge that a picture will later be edited, manipulated, or montage to result in a final image that may be very different from the one seen in the viewfinder.

The Permanence and Care of Color Photographs

Henry Wilhelm with contributing author Carol Brower was the world's first, and is still the only book on the often controversial subject of preserving our fading color photographic heritage.
Fully illustrated, more than 740 pages in length, and over 20 years in the making, the book discusses the permanence (and the impermanence!) of color photographs).
Hundreds of color print, color negative, slide, and color motion picture materials are evaluated under controlled conditions and ranked according to their image stability. The book dramatically shows that some color print and film materials last far longer than others.

Shooting Digital Pro Tips for Taking Great Pictures with Your Digital Camera

A digital camera is functionally identical to a traditional film camera in all respects except image storage, right? Not at all, and Mikkel Aaland shows exactly why in his excellent Shooting Digital. He shows why digital cameras--the point-and-shoot variety as well as fancier models meant for professional photographers--are overall neither better nor worse than cameras of older design, and goes on to show you how to take advantage of their special traits. He shows how to compensate for their shortcomings, too, notably shutter lag (for which he documents a useful testing procedure) and color fringing. Though there's some coverage of creating animated GIFs, this book generally sticks to shooting time and leaves editing to other volumes.
Aaland never forgets that digital cameras should be more cameras than digital, and his book serves as an excellent photography text for hobbyists and aspiring professionals. The author's advice in this area is both technical (how to light a still life and how to best a strobe to eliminate shadows) and artistic (why kids should be encouraged to photograph other kids, and how you can use perspective to create weird effects). He's an accomplished photographer who obviously loves his work, and his enthusiasm for making art with a camera--and, for that matter, just playing with one--come through brilliantly. --David Wall
Topics covered: Photography--of objects, people, places, action, nature, and other subjects--as accomplished with a modern digital camera. Emphasis falls on the relationship between camera and subject, as defined by focus, lighting, composition, and motion. Further attention goes to image manipulation accomplished via camera settings (like white balance and exposure, and, a little bit, to post-shoot processing with image software. There's also nice coverage of the differences among various image file formats.

Professional Techniques For The Wedding Photograher

People who don't like people have no business taking people pictures and, most of all, wedding photography is a people business. In the course of their work, wedding photographers encounter every type of nuptial ritual, from Christian to Jewish to Buddhist to "holistic," and enough characters and situations to fill a book. Sit down with an experienced wedding photographer and talk with him or her about the trade you'll hear stories both sublime and ridiculous, and about situations that range from high comedy to moments filled with genuine emotion. But that's what makes wedding photography such a fascinating profession, or avocation. To an outsider, each wedding may look the same, but the seasoned wedding photographer knows better. It's hard work, and the demands made during the course of the day might well leave most mortals exhausted. Yet, with all the labor comes a reward and that's the knowledge that, as the photographer, you've shared in one of the most intimate and touching moments in people's lives. How you approach this shared time, and the way you apply your skills as a photographer/artist, will make the difference between a mechanical, and ultimately tedious experience and one that is emotionally and financially rewarding. It will definitely also make the difference between your ultimate success or failure in the wedding photography business.

Practical Artistry Light and Exposure for Digital Photographers

Harold Davis is an accomplished photographer, many of his fine art photos have become well known posters such as those published by the New York Graphic Society.
He is also a prolific author, with more than 20 books to his name, including Digital Photography: Digital Field Guide (Wiley), The Photographer’s Guide to Yosemite and the High Sierra (Countryman/W.W.Norton) and 100 Views of the Golden Gate (Wilderness Press).
Harold’s latest book, Practical Artistry: Light & Exposure for Digital Photographers is a fine example of his work both as photographer and author. The artful way that the images and text are presented in the book are very instructive to amateurs and could also be a spark for experienced photographers looking for inspiration.
The images are stunning. This is fine art photography at its best. But instead of just admiring the pictures, you are actually encouraged to shoot the same photos by following the author’s directions. The artful photos in the book are accompanied by very instructive captions that tell you exactly how each image was captured. It’s like having a mentor come to your side and say, “Hey, buddy, look at these photos. Ain’t they great? Here’s how I got them.”
For example, on page 23 Harold describes how he took a photo of an old barn fence:
“Sunset cast strong shadows of an old fence on a barn along the northern California coast. I knew that I want to capture detail, so I picked the lowest available ISO (100).
“I knew I needed the entire image to be in focus, because I wanted the right part of the image to appear to be part of the same plane as the part of the shadow projected on the barn. To get as much of the image as possible to be in focus (high depth of field) I selected the smallest available aperture (f/32).
“With ISO and aperture selected, I used the exposure equation to choose the shutter speed that matched the average light from the scene falling on the sensor…”
And he describes the rest of the shooting process, detailing what kind of lens he used, the shutter speed, aperture, ISO and whether a tripod was used or not. He does this with every image in the book, and the book is chock-full of these artistic images!
That’s for the captions. The images in the book are captioned, every single one of them describing how the images were taken and you can actually follow along to make the same exposure settings with your own images to deepen your understanding of your photography. For those new to DSLR photography, this is very useful. Indeed, this is practical artistry in action!
The main text of the book is another interesting matter. Harold takes the principles of classical photography, condenses them in his own straightforward words and applies them to today’s digital photography. He proceeds from the premise that if you understand the principles behind a concept, it’s easy to look up the details.
In the main text, he dwells on such mandatory topics as shutter speed, aperture and ISO, the 3 main things to understand if you are to get exposure right. He also discusses the creative use of lighting and how to work with white balance. Even night photography is covered. Chapter 6 guides you through digital processing of your images, today’s very convenient equivalent of the darkroom of old, using your computer and some software instead of the dark, lonely and smelly darkroom.
As he discusses the underlying principles in the main text, the accompanying photographs offer very instructive captions that explain his photographic process and creative intention. There is a preponderance of macro and landscape shots among the images, perhaps a reflection of the author’s preference. But they are all stunning. They all demonstrate, in a very real and artistic way, how the principles of light and exposure are applied.
Light and exposure, these are the main things the author focuses on in this book. Why, that is practically what photography is all about, technically. Get your lighting and exposure right and you get a good handle in capturing images.
But of course, the author writes, “It’s worth remembering that cameras, lenses, and software don’t take photos. People do. Your eye, your heart and your spirit will have far more impact on the photos you take than the hardware or software you use.”
This is a great book. I agree with photojournalist Rick Smolan when he said that if you could buy only one book, this is the book to have. Its photos are inspiring, its instructions very uplifting.
By the way, if you’re in California on July 27, 2008, you can catch Harold Davis at a Book Passage event at 1 Ferry Building, #42 San Francisco, CA. He will be presenting images of the Golden Gate, and answer questions from the audience. A book signing session follows.

Photoshop Effects for Portrait Photographers

Award winning photographer, Christopher Grey, has developed techniques to enhance portrait photography, using the creative applications available in Photoshop. Photoshop Effects for Portrait Photographers contains detailed explanations of how to replicate many darkroom techniques with Photoshop (Dodging, Burning, Vignettes, etc.) as well as camera and earlier technology techniques (Short Focus, High Speed Film Grain, Hand Colouring, etc.).
Grey has also developed almost two dozen ways to replicate traditional painterly and illustrative techniques such as Rough Charcoal Sketch, Wet Watercolour, Silkscreen, and Oil Chalk.
Over the time I needed to write this book, it became obvious I had to make a few assumptions about my audience. My first (and most necessary) assumption is that you are at least familiar with Photoshop on an intermediate level, that you understand the concept of Layers and Blending Modes and that you are willing to spend some time to learn a new way of thinking. If you’re new to Photoshop, there’s no reason why you can’t use my tricks, but any introductory instruction you might need will have to be found elsewhere. Even though these effects were built with Photoshop CS2, they will (almost) all work with any version of PS that supports Layers. Within the entire book, I believe I’ve used only two filters that are new to CS2, but those are largely optional steps, anyway.
It’s always annoyed me when authors tell you to “Click OK” at the end of each step, as if you’re too stupid to figure out that if you don’t, nothing will happen. I only wrote it once (okay, maybe twice), because it was necessary for the instruction. There are many keyboard shortcuts within Photoshop which become second nature for some users. I’ve deliberately not noted them, and have left it up to you and your level of expertise and preference as to whether or not you’ll use them. For each technique, I’ve tried to make these sometimes complicated instructions as simple as possible. Most of the images used as samples are studio portraiture, although I’ve placed a few non-portrait samples here and there. The techniques I’m presenting, while wonderful for portrait photographers, are equally valuable for stock photographers and photographic fine artists. All of the first-state images are available for you to download so you can precisely follow my directions and get the same results you see in this book.

Photographic Possibilities

Photographic Possibilities is the third technical book written by Robert Hirsch, this time with the collaboration of John Valentino. This is the second edition, the first was released in 1991. This new book is designed “for the individual who has acquired a keen interest [and practice] and desires to learn a variety of processes as a means of reaching new visual goals.” The two noticeable changes in the current edition, notwithstanding the updating of several articles, are its pedagogical, historical, and at times philosophical introduction, and the two chapters on which John Valentino worked, dedicated to digital imaging.
The book starts with “Why We Make Photographs: Ideas and History that Affect Photographic Print-making.” It presents, in a synthesized form, the experiences and notes collected by the author over the course of some two decades spent teaching photography, working as curator as well as a fine-art photographer.
Among other ideas Hirsch develops the point, sometimes forgotten, that art without mastery of the craft drastically limits the expression of the author. “By gaining an understanding of a wide range of photographic processes, readers can expand their visual vocabulary and place themselves in a better position to control the outcome. Learning to control a process is the first step an image-maker must master to transform an abstract idea into a physical reality…This puts process in service of concept to create meaningful con-tent....”
Two other challenging themes that the author explores, after a rapid historical survey, are “truth and beauty” in photography, reflecting here a recent trend in the arts pursued by creators and critics who are getting tired of “postmodern irony” as the contemporary “major form of artistic expression.”
In a concise but detailed way, Hirsch defines, describes, and gives over a hundred possible forms of photographic expression of one’s creative mind, starting with the choosing of film, developers, papers—what they can and cannot do—giving out numerous formulas for those who want to be in total control of their developing, toning, coloring, etc.
Co-author John Valentino deals with photography and computers. As in the first part, a quick historical background is given by the author who then investigates the pros and cons of digital imagery and the ethical and copyright issues raised by the new medium. The authors then go through a concise but precise description of all the tools of the trade, from computers and their components, to scanners and digital cameras. However a quick list and presentation of the main imaging software on the market, Adobe’s Photo-shop for instance, seems to be missing.
Photographic Possibilities is an extremely well documented and illustrated course in advanced photography and I would recommend it to students and knowledgeable photographers alike without any reservation. BC

MicroStock Photography

There is a revolution under way in how photographs are taken, sold, and
used. It is a revolution that has opened up extraordinary new opportunities
for photographers and users and buyers of photography. The Internet,
digital imaging, and rise of new channels to market—including the subject
of this book, the micro stock image libraries—make right now the most
exciting time in many years to be involved in photography.
Understanding the revolution and how you can profi t from it is what
this book is about. It is not a history book or a philosophical work
but, rather, a practical tool about photo graphy and money, how to
make it and to save it, whether you are a photographer or a buyer of
photography. Of course, your perspective will be different depending
on who you are and what you do. That is why the next two parts of
this introduction are addressed to two complementary audiences—
photographers of all levels of ability and their actual or prospective
clients.

Lighting Photo Workshop

To say that light is integral to photography is just scratching the surface. This book is just scratching
the surface of all the angles and colors and direction that light can present to you in the viewfinder.
As a photographer, you need light on the subject to create an image, but to create a great image,
you need to get the best light you can on the subject.
Great light can come in many ways. Sometimes it just happens, and other times it takes time and
patience to create or shape the light in your photographs. Take the time to wait for a few minutes
to see whether the light changes, and savor the moments that you are shooting or waiting to shoot
because you are not just seeing things through the camera, you are experiencing life happening
before your eyes. Then you can take that slice of life home with you.
I hope that the images inspire you, if nothing more than to just take your camera with you or to keep it
close to you for when the light is happening. Even more, I hope the images inspire you to try new
things. Use the images here as guides and signposts so that you can recognize the things happening in
your own images and better know how to capture the images that you see in your mind.
One of the goals that I had for this book was to show how it is possible to create better photographs
with light that is there, no matter whether it is great light or not. This entails some testing and practice
and trying new things, but that discovery is so exciting. When you begin to realize the skills that
you are developing because you can better see and work with light, your photography becomes like second
nature.

Light Science and Magic

Fil Hunter, Steven Biver, and Paul Fuqua ease the novice reader in with very basic lighting concepts focused on two-dimensional subjects. Each chapter builds until you have an understanding of how to light complicated objects like metal and glass. The diagrams and supporting pictures clearly illustrate the concepts, and the writing is very natural and easy to understand. When I finished the book, I had the know-how and confidence to light just about any project.
This is such a great book because the authors teach the principles of lighting instead of just showing you how to achieve certain effects or lighting styles. These principles can be applied to many situations and utilized to achieve any effect you desire. In other words, you won’t find just a lighting cookbook here. Rather, read this book and you will learn how to think about lighting and understand it from the ground up. This puts you in control of how your photos will look.

Digital Photography in Available Light - Essential Skills

introduction
Location photography covers a wide range of disciplines. From the captured image of a fl eeting
moment using existing light to the highly structured and preconceived advertising image using
introduced lighting. This book is intended for photographers working on location using primarily the
existing or 'available' light source. The information, activities and assignments provide the essential
skills for creative and competent photography. The chapters offer a comprehensive and highly
structured learning approach, giving support and guidance in a logical and sequential manner.
Basic theoretical information is included along with practical advice gathered from numerous
professional photographers. An emphasis on useful (essential) practical advice maximizes the
opportunities for creative photography.
Acquisition of technique
This book is designed to help you learn both the technical and creative aspects of photography.
The initial chapters provide the framework for the assignment briefs that follow. The chapters will
help you acquire the essential skills required to confi dently undertake a broad range of location
work using ambient light. Terminology is kept as simple as possible using only those terms in
common usage by practising professionals. The emphasis has been placed upon a practical
approach to the subject and the application of the essential skills.
Application of technique
The book concludes with several chapters devoted to the practical application of the skills
acquired in the earlier chapters of the book. Assignments can be undertaken in each of the three
areas allowing the photographer to express themselves and their ideas through the appropriate
application of design and technique. This book offers a structured learning approach that will give
the photographer a framework and solid foundation for working independently and confi dently on
assignment.
The essential skills
To acquire the essential skills required to become a professional photographer takes time and
motivation. The skills covered should be practised repeatedly so that they become practical
working knowledge rather than just basic understanding. Practice the skills obtained in one chapter
and apply them to each of the following activities or assignments where appropriate. Eventually
the technical and creative skills can be applied intuitively or instinctively and you will be able to
communicate with clarity and creativity.
